Hurricane Ike has left his mark on our city, and Glenwood was not spared his wrath. Many large trees are down, including some of our specimen oaks, pines and cedars. The grounds and roads are covered with limbs, leaves and other storm debris. Fortunately, there is relatively little damage to statuary and monuments, and most of what occurred can be repaired.

The Glenwood office can be reached by telephone during normal business hours. However, the cemetery will remain closed until dangerous conditions, such as fallen trees, are removed. Cleanup began on Sunday following the storm and is progressing as rapidly as possible. The Glenwood crews are working overtime. A professional tree service and other contractors have been brought in to speed the process. We are confident that Glenwood will be welcoming visitors to enjoy the beautiful landscape in the very near future. In the meantime, the gates are locked and there are security patrols on the grounds around the clock.

Note to those who treasure Glenwood: Day-to-day maintenance and operation of Glenwood Cemetery are paid from lot sale revenues and service fees. Funding for all other needs, including the massive task of cleaning up Glenwood and repairing and restoring hurricane damage, is provided by the Glenwood Cemetery Historic Preservation Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization. See the Foundation's Web page for descriptions of its other projects. Please consider participating with us in restoring Glenwood so that it will continue to be a reminder of our city’s history and a place of natural beauty to be enjoyed by all citizens.
