SUMMARY:Historic Glenwood Cemetery Part I: Houston Before Oil Walking Tour
DESCRIPTION:While Glenwood Cemetery is renowned for its magnificent Victorian monuments\, it also tells the stories of more recent generations. \nJoin Preservation Houston for a docent-led walking tour through some of Glenwood’s newer sections as we highlight the lives and legacies of notable 20th-century Houstonians laid to rest here. \nGlenwood Cemetery\, established in 1871 on rolling\, wooded land near Buffalo Bayou\, is one of Houston’s most beautiful outdoor spaces. It is also the final resting place of many of the people who shaped the city in its earliest years\, including railroad executives\, bankers\, politicians and architects. This two-hour\, docent-guided walking tour focuses on several notable figures active during Houston’s first decades. \nThings to remember \nThis tour involves walking over uneven ground and may include a few steps. The route is not recommended for those with mobility limitations. Please e-mail tours@preservationhouston.org with any specific accessibility questions. \nPreservation Houston\, in partnership with Glenwood Cemetery\, offers guided walking tours of the cemetery four times a year by reservation only.
