This Texas Heroes Day, we honor the men who served and sacrificed during the Republic of Texas era. The Mier Expedition ended in defeat and captivity, culminating in the tragic Black Bean Episode, where 17 captured Texans were chosen by lottery and executed. Among the survivors was John E. Dusenberry, who was later laid to rest at Glenwood Cemetery. His story connects Glenwood to one of the most poignant chapters in Texas history. An Anhinga, also known as a “snakebird,” was recently spotted at Glenwood perched above the water with its wings spread to dry. Anhinga are skilled swimmers and divers, using their long, slender necks and sharp, pointed bills to hunt fish underwater. Their nickname comes from the way they swim with most of their body submerged, leaving only their long, snake-like neck visible above the surface. Unlike many other waterbirds, Anhingas have feathers that are less water-repellent, allowing them to dive and move more easily beneath the surface. After a swim, they can often be seen perched with their wings dramatically outstretched to dry. Native to the southeastern United States and commonly found around ponds, lakes, bayous, and wetlands, Anhingas are another example of the incredible variety of wildlife that can be found throughout Glenwood’s grounds. 🌿 #GlenwoodCemetery #Anhinga #Snakebird #HoustonWildlife #BirdingHouston

A Sweet Gathering at Glenwood 🍯🐝 Our Glenwood Circle members joined us for an evening exploring the world of honeybees and the important role they play at Glenwood. Guests enjoyed a honey tasting, learned about our apiary and the unique flavors of different varieties of honey, and watched a honey harvesting demonstration led by Glenwood’s beekeeper. On Women’s Equality Day, we honor Annette Finnigan, a Houston philanthropist and advocate whose life reflected a deep commitment to expanding opportunities for women. Alongside her sisters, Annette used her resources and influence to support education, the arts, and opportunities for women at a time when their access to higher education and public life was still limited. Her legacy can be seen in the institutions and causes she championed throughout her lifetime. Today, as we commemorate the adoption of the 19th Amendment and the generations of women who worked toward greater equality, we remember women like Annette Finnigan whose contributions helped create opportunities for those who followed. An 8-ounce Hadacol bottle was discovered during routine maintenance at Glenwood Cemetery, representing a remarkable mid-century American marketing craze. Produced from 1943 to the mid-1950s, Hadacol was created by Louisiana Senator Dudley LeBlanc, who combined elements from his earlier company, Happy Day Company. He humorously noted, "Well, I hadda call it something!" Marketed as a "dietary supplement," Hadacol gained notoriety across the South, thanks to its 12% alcohol content (24-proof), which appealed to those in dry counties. LeBlanc also launched the "Hadacol Caravan," a star-studded traveling show featuring artists like Hank Williams and Judy Garland, with admission costing just two Hadacol box tops. The catchy song "The Hadacol Boogie" helped boost sales to tens of millions of dollars. Born in Houston in 1843 to Swiss immigrant parents, George Hermann became one of the city's most influential businessmen and philanthropists. After building his fortune in real estate and transportation, he dedicated his life to giving back to the community that helped shape him. When Hermann passed away in 1914, he left the majority of his estate to the City of Houston with the vision of improving the lives of future generations. His remarkable generosity helped establish Hermann Park and supported the growth of what is now Memorial Hermann Health System, creating a legacy that continues to serve Houstonians more than a century later. In the late 1800s, above-ground mausoleums became popular in American cemeteries, but Glenwood Cemetery's board was dedicated to preserving its serene open hills and beautiful landscape. � Over the years, Glenwood turned down several proposals for community mausoleums, including a tempting $500,000 offer in 1938, as they prioritized their commitment to non-profit values. � In April 1950, a new proposal emerged from the National Mausoleum Sales Co., Inc., in partnership with a Houston construction company.
